Harp high altitude
WebThe ionosphere begins at an altitude of about 70 km, reaches a peak daytime density of something like a million particles per cubic centimeter near 250 km, and tapers off above that altitude to blend into the much more rarefied plasmasphere, magnetosphere, and … WebNew charges using modern powder were soon supplied, and by November 1962 the 150-kilogram Martlets were being fired at over 10,000 ft/s (3,048 m/s; 6,818 mph) and reaching altitudes of 215,000 ft (66,000 m). The Martlets evolved through this period, growing in size and sophistication. As Bull later put it:

The main instrument at HAARP is the Ionospheric Research Instrument (IRI). This is a high-power, high-frequency phased array radio transmitter with a set of 180 antennas, disposed in an array of 12×15 units that occupy a rectangle of about 30–40 acres (12–16 hectares). The IRI is used to temporarily energize a small portion of the ionosphere. The study of these disturbed volumes yields important information for understanding natural ionospheric processes.
