There's other skills that have really useful perks such as Mechanical but I've not had any trouble leveling them up later with the skill points I got through gameplay.

If you can recreate this problem predictably, then the game is probably stressed with whatever you are doing and I would suggest to stop and do something else.

Her perception makes her a great sniper, and has enough mech skill to use for for lockpicking in the field. Her only downside is Craig.
